Welcome To Girl Scout Mariner Ship 1548

Upcoming Events: It's Regatta Time Again!

We are GSUSA Mariner Scout Ship 1548, a troop for girls in Calvert County, Charles and St. Mary's County interested in a variety of Nautical and Maritime activities.

Our troop, properly called a Ship, is a Studio 2B program for girls 11 - 17 and is designed to teach leadership and responsibility through boating and water related programs.  We operate as part of the Girl Scout Council of the Nation’s Capital (GSCNC).

The Mariner Girl Scouts started in the 1930s, and while it has changed over the years, we want to continue to uphold the traditions of the sea under the auspices GSUSA high adventure program.  Presently, there are only a handful of Mariner Ships in the US.  Mariner Scouting is a fun and rigorous program that leads our youth through the skills necessary to be competent sailors and mature leaders.

The Mariners meet on Tuesday evenings with the scout van leaving from Burger King in Solomons at 5:30pm and providing transportation along the route to our meeting location at Holy Angels Hall.

To enhance the Mariners program further, it overlaps with that of BSA Sea Scout Ship 548 based out of Avenue near St. Clements Island.  As their Sistership, Mariners are encouraged to participate in SSS-548’s training and other fun activities, allowing us to share their resources, including the Sea Scout Ship Sea Eagle, a 46 foot Schooner.

Activities include sailing, boating safety and other nautical skills.  A number of smaller sailboats, canoes, and rowing boats are used in the program.  The Mariners have the Flagship MSS Sweet Charity Too, a 28 foot Catalina Sloop.  Of course, the Mariners participate in the usual fun stuff.

The Mariners design and implement their Ship’s program, structure and government including money-earning events, activities, and advancement structure.  Also as part of an indoor winter projects, the Mariners work on various smaller boats providing valuable training in the use of tools, woodworking and finishing under the tutelage of a master.
